Microfinance 'bear bit' to reduce poverty

This is not possible to remove poverty, through the provision of only micro-credit as his contribution to the reduction of poverty in rural areas of the country only 4 percent, economists said a seminar on Wednesday.

Their contribution is only 4 percent, but its benefits to the poor can be addressed with the impact of the poverty rate alone, they said citing results of a recent study.

The microfinance Institute organizes the seminar entitled ' asset growth and dynamics of poverty in rural Bangladesh: the role of microcredit ' in the Palli Karma Shahayak Foundation Auditorium in the capital.

Headed by PKSF Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, the seminar, among others, food and disaster management Minister Dr. Abdur Razzaque, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman and InM interim executive Director Dr Mosleh Uddin Sadeque established.

Professor SR Osmani, a teacher from the Development Department of Economics, University of Ulster, UK a made power point presentation at the meeting.

As the chief guest Dr. Abdur Razzaque said, that poverty is really, that had a major issue in Bangladesh and all previous Governments in their efforts for the control.

On the role of microfinance, he said that many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as mushroom around the country have grown up.  "So, the role of microcredit to poverty reduction is doubtful today."

' NGOs are more by high interest earn. We have seriously think like them,' the Food Minister said.

He stressed the categorization of financial institutions to monitor their role to reduce poverty.

Dr. Atiur said that the poor can benefit services from micro-credit, if it helps that they and not income to resist blows such as an economic disaster from the sudden death of family members, the loss of economic assets, or other losses from natural disasters.

He said that the poor can have not the scope for smooth consumption during disasters, if there is no insurance system for them, which can lead to cuts in essential food and non-food expenditure.

The Governor who said the Central Bank, more innovation is needed in order to strengthen the role of crucial mitigating and offer flexible financial services for different types of poor households in particular extreme poverty.

Dr. Atiur said, it is clear that microfinance protect budget from shocks, social norms about the role of women in society contribute changing, and cause that some households move poverty.

Dr. Kholiquzzaman said increased fund flow through rural microfinance can be guaranteed. "We have to change the State of borrowers loans, but it's very hard to measure, how much change in their lifestyle, comes" he said.

SR was Osmani in his study, access to microfinance reduces the likelihood of arm to 2.5 percent by assets.
